Start with the finished physical size

Print design begins with the trim size, not the screen size. Decide the finished width and height, the required bleed, and the target resolution before placing raster images. This prevents a layout from looking complete in Photoshop while containing images that are too small for the final output.

Use effective DPI, not just the original file value

An image may start at 300 DPI and fall below that after it is enlarged in a layout. What matters is the effective resolution at the placed size. Use an image print size calculator to check the final pixel dimensions against the physical size used in the document.

For a 6 x 4 inch image at 300 DPI, aim for at least 1800 x 1200 pixels. If the same file is enlarged to 12 x 8 inches, its effective resolution drops to 150 DPI.

Calculate bleed before export

Bleed extends artwork beyond the final cut edge. If the printer asks for 0.125 inches on every side, the exported page must be 0.25 inches wider and 0.25 inches taller than the trim size. A bleed calculation is especially important for full-color backgrounds, photographs, and shapes that touch an edge.

  • A 5 x 7 inch card with 0.125 inch bleed becomes 5.25 x 7.25 inches.
  • An 8.5 x 11 inch flyer becomes 8.75 x 11.25 inches.
  • A 24 x 36 inch poster becomes 24.25 x 36.25 inches, unless the printer specifies another amount.

Aspect ratio prevents accidental cropping

An aspect ratio print size calculator compares the shape of an image with the shape of the print area. A 3:2 photograph does not fill an 8 x 10 frame without cropping. Designers should choose the crop deliberately rather than relying on automatic fitting at export or upload.
